Oval vs. Square Bathroom Sinks
Bathroom styles change over time, and your perfect bathroom style may evolve based on how you use the space, what renovations you are doing to other rooms and areas near the bathroom, and simply because you want to change things up. And part of that style is reflected in your sink, tub, toilet, and fixture choices. So, let’s talk about the difference in bathroom sink shapes. Specifically, let’s discuss the differences between choosing oval sinks versus square bathroom sinks.
Sink Shapes
There are dozens of sink shapes and designs. But not all bathroom sinks are created equal when it comes to looks and functionality. And we are just talking about the sink itself today, not the vanity style or shape.
Some deep sinks with high edges – think of a sink that looks like a vanity counter with a bowl sitting on top – are gorgeous and great at keeping water in, but the high walls are a pain to work around when you are using the sink to wash your hands and face or brush your teeth.
Other sink shapes are too shallow, which can lead to messes caused by pairing the shallow sink with the wrong faucet, causing splashing and other conditions that aren’t ideal for your bathroom sink experience.
With these things in mind, it’s important to pay attention to the fixtures, space, and functionality that come with available sink options.
It’s also important to think about the height and size of the vanity you want to put your sink on or in. A lot of this depends on the size of the bathroom, but you should also consider your needs and the needs of your family. If you have small children, a higher or lower sink could be important for access and safety. And family members with disabilities will also need to be able to use your bathroom.
But most people focus on function first (as many vanities and sinks come in standard sizes, with custom options available).
After function comes fashion – what is the style you are hoping to achieve in your bathroom? Do you want it to look more modern? Vintage? Do you have a theme you’re going for?
These are all things to consider before you pick out your bathroom fixtures and furnishings.
As far as sink shapes, by far the most popular continues to be oval and square (or rectangular). While you may think the difference is just a few rounded sides or pointed corners, there is a bit more to consider.
Oval Sinks
Over time, the most popular sink shape has been the oval shape. Part of its allure is in the aesthetics. In a bathroom, having the rounded sink creates a nice curve that can be complemented by a number of differently styled countertops, including granite, quartz, marble, and other stone and synthetic surfaces. Oval sinks are great for versatile styles and spaces.
But because oval sinks have been a staple for so many years, there is not much excitement in the trend. It’s a safer style that brings a more classic (or dated, depending on your preferences) look to the space.
There are lots of ways to spice up an oval sink by including more ornate design elements in the vanity or cabinets around the sink, or by including a statement-style mirror that speaks to a more non-traditional aesthetic.
Square Bathroom Sinks
Square bathroom sinks are a more unique choice for your bathroom look. Square furnishings and accessories in the bathroom often lend themselves to a more modern look, without being so trendy that it will look outdated in just a few years.
Square sinks also create a nice symmetry with your square and rectangular vanity options, offering a nice continuity and clean lines overall.
Square bathroom sinks also create a flat edge as you transition from the countertop to the sink, which means you can organize things around the edge of the sink without having to worry about uneven surfaces.
If you are looking to create a statement with your bathroom style and design, square sinks are definitely the way to go.
