3 Big Things to Consider When Renovating Your Kitchen
Thinking about remodeling your kitchen, but not sure where to start? Whether you’re looking to update your space to something more modern or renovate a fun and colorful vintage room, here are some things to consider when renovating your kitchen.
Renovating Your Kitchen Layout
Sometimes it’s hard to see a space for what it could be when you are looking at how it is. Before you start your kitchen reno project, take some time to think about the areas in your kitchen that could be improved or issues you’d like to fix.
These issues could be as small as have cabinets with too-short shelves, sharp corners on your counters, not enough light in the room, or it could be as big as needing to rebuild or remodel sections of your kitchen to accommodate new appliances – a larger refrigerator, or a new dishwasher, for example.
It doesn’t matter who you hire or ask to help you with your kitchen project, coming into it with a clear idea of your preferred layout (this can be a rough idea, it doesn’t need to be planned out foot-by-foot) will help contractors create what you want, and allows you to have input on the design before you are living with it.
Flooring
When renovating your kitchen, switching up your kitchen floor is a great way to pull the look of the room together or to make a bold statement. There are tons of options when it comes to materials, like wood, laminate, natural stone, cork, porcelain, and tile. Since this is a floor that will often be wet or dirty, it’s good to compare different materials based on thickness, resilience, and texture. A smooth, white ceramic floor may be beautiful, but if you have a family that is prone to spills, you may be trading function and even a bit of safety for polish.
The most important thing is to think about what you want – trends and best practices are great starting points, but you are going to live and function in this space, so you should discuss these things with your contractor to be sure you are getting exactly what you want out of it.

Cabinet Style & Space
Your kitchen is a room with many functions. It’s a place for congregating, eating meals, cleaning, cooking, and baking. On top of all that, it’s also an important storage space for both perishables and non-perishables.
Due to the many things you do in that space, creating an ergonomic layout – one that fits all appliances – often means getting creative with cabinet space. Take stock of your current layout – do you like how tall the shelves are? Are they too short, or too deep? Do you have trouble reaching things at the top or back of a shelf? Do you notice spaces that are being underutilized?
And after you’ve taken stock of the functionality, it’s time to talk about style. Do you have a certain color of appliances that you’d like to match the cabinets too? Are you looking to add a pop of color? You can do all this in your kitchen renovation when you install new or updated cabinets.
